Who doesn’t love a bookshop? If you don’t it’s probably best that you keep it to yourself :-)

What is Love Your Bookshop Day you ask? Do we need a really a day to celebrate bookshops? Um, yes – we do.

To me bookshops are a place to get lost in and to explore and find new stories. Just being in the presence of that many books is a peaceful, almost meditative feeling for me. Libraries provide the same thing for me as well but I do find it very difficult to not buy books.

Bookshops are one of my favourite places – as is my library at home. My husband collects motorbikes and has an appropriately sized man cave to house them so it makes sense that my collection – my books – have a place too. But before they get to live in my library they come from the bookshop and before that the publisher and before that the imagination of someone totally awesome. My local bookshop is a place I visit every time I am at my local shops. Even if I don’t need anything. I just need to go in and browse. Needless to say my ‘To be read’ (TBR) pile is huge. I am I’m getting off track.

Back to the question.

What is Love Your Bookshop Day?

Over at www.loveyourbookshop.com.au they say this:

Bookshops across Australia are throwing a party and you are invited! Love Your Bookshop Day is a chance to celebrate what makes your local bookshop great. Whether it’s for their amazing staff, their carefully curated range or specialisation or a must-see events program, we encourage you to visit your favourite bookshop on Saturday 12 August and join in with the celebrations.”

Love Your Bookshop Day is organised by the Australian Booksellers Association a non-profit national body representing bookshops all around Australia. They “…. recognise and celebrate the special role that books and bookselling play in society – creating community, supporting ideas and creativity, and opening doors to other worlds and experiences.”
