August/September 2014

MasqueradeThis month I have chosen Masquerade by Aussie author Kylie Fornasier. Released on the 23rd July 2014 by Penguin Australia, this is her first novel for young adults and I’m really looking forward to reading it. Kylie’s children’s book The Ugg Boot War was released earlier this year and in November her picture book The Prince Who Shrank is out. Sounds like its been a big year for Kylie Fornasier!

Description: It’s the Carnevale of 1750 and Venice’s ballrooms, theatres, palazzos and squares are filled with delicious gossip, devilish fun and dangerous games. In this glittering masked world, everyone has a secret. Set in an age of decadence made famous by Casanova, Masquerade uncovers the secrets of seven teens, from the highest aristocrat to the lowest servant – their dreams, desires, loves, loyalties … and betrayals. All the world’s a stage. Let the show begin.

 July/August 2014
Claire Zorn

This month I have chosen the YA novel The Sky So Heavy by Claire Zorn published by the University of Queensland Press.

Shortlisted for the Children’s Books Council of Australia – Book of the Year Older Reader, the Aurealis Awards – Best Young Adult Novel, and Long-listed for the Inky Awards – this debut novel has been very well-recieved and will make a great read for book club. I hope you can join me this month.

With themes about family, nuclear warfare, courage, death, spirituality and survival, I am looking forward to the discussion about this book. How would we react if nuclear missiles were detonated right now and a nuclear winter descended upon us? What is important would become very clear, very quickly. Food, water and warmth.

Read the first chapter for The Sky So Heavy HERE.

 June/July 2014

Jamie ReignThis month we are reading Jamie Reign: The Last Spirit Warrior, the debut novel of author P.J Tierney. With Kung Fu, ancient magic and adventure it is no wonder it was nominated for the 2014 Readings Children’s Book Prize, which recognises and celebrates books that families love reading together and aims to raise the profile of debut and on-the-rise Australian authors. What a great achievement for P.J Tierney to have been nominated for this inaugural prize!

John Flanagan, author of The Rangers Apprentice describes the novel as ‘…intriguing and ingenious …Jamie Reign keeps the plot bubbling and the pages turning.’ The second novel in the series Jamie Reign: The Hidden Dragon is out in September, so if you haven’t read Book 1 yet then now is a good time to join us in reading it as there won’t be long to wait in between reads!

May 2014

John GreenThis month we have chosen a popular young adult novel about love and loss and a children’s fantasy novel set in the dark streets of Victorian London. If you have read either of the books already, still add your comment and join us at the end of the month for our discussion.   The Fault in our Stars by John Green If anyone reading this has a teenage daughter then they would have heard of this New York Times best seller. Published in 2012 the New York Times review called it “a blend of melancholy, sweet, philosophical and funny”. On Thursday the 5th of June the movie is released in Australia. I know this, as someone in my house has commandeered my calendar and loaded in a recurring reminder just in case I forget. This someone has suggested Sam will have miss to soccer training on Thursday 5th June as WE WILL BE AT THE MOVIES with a box of tissues.
